Seongdong-gu Provides Food Waste Bin Cleaning Service for 2,500 Restaurants

Seongdong-gu, Seoul (Mayor Jung Won-oh) will implement the ‘Food Waste Collection Container Cleaning Project’ targeting local restaurants from April to October, a period when high temperatures increase odors from decay and pest occurrences.

Seongdong-gu has been promoting the ‘Food Waste Collection Container Cleaning Project’ since 2021, and this year, due to the noticeably warmer weather, the project started about a month earlier than last year.

The project targets approximately 2,500 restaurants in 15 areas including major commercial districts and traditional markets within the district. It excludes places where food waste bins are usually well maintained, such as rest stops with little leftover food, bakeries, convenience stores, and side dish shops, focusing instead on general restaurants that discharge large amounts of food wastewater and leftovers.

The cleaning service is conducted twice a month per restaurant (based on the day after food waste collection day). It involves spraying cleaning solution and high-temperature steam into the food waste bins to clean residuals inside the containers and sterilize them with eco-friendly disinfectants. For smooth cleaning operations, it is important that restaurants in the designated areas dispose of their food waste bins on the scheduled days.

In places with limited workspace, such as Geumnam Market and Ttukdo Market, collection containers are gathered in one place for centralized cleaning. Stickers for dedicated food waste collection containers are also distributed and attached to guide proper food waste disposal methods and raise awareness of cleanliness management.

Jung Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, said, "Since odors and urban aesthetic deterioration easily occur due to food waste disposal in summer, we will strive to create a clean street environment by regularly cleaning food waste bins and preventing pests and odors."
