An accomplice in the hacking incident of the famous online bookstore 'Aladin' was sentenced to one year in prison again in the appellate trial.
On the 2nd, the Criminal Appeals Division 1-2 of the Seoul Eastern District Court (Presiding Judge Kim Chang-hyun) upheld the original sentence of one year in prison for Jeong Mo (26), who was indicted for charges of extortion and violation of the Act on the Aggravated Punishment, etc. of Specific Crimes related to Concealment of Criminal Proceeds. The court stated, "Considering the balance with the sentence of another accomplice, Park Mo, the original sentence does not appear to be unjust."
Jeong is accused of collecting 75.2 million won left by Aladin at the Seodaemun Station locker last May. Jeong's lawyer said, "He only participated after being asked to collect and deliver the cash from the locker and did not know the specific details of the crime."
Earlier, the main culprit, high school student Park, hacked Aladin on May 16 last year and threatened, "If you do not send 100 BTC (about 3.6 billion won at the time), it will go up to 1 million copies." After negotiations with Park, Aladin agreed to send 8 BTC (about 290 million won at the time) in three installments. When only 0.319 BTC was transferred due to suspicious transactions detected at domestic virtual asset exchanges, Park demanded 75.2 million won in cash equivalent to 2 BTC. Park is currently awaiting a Supreme Court ruling.
