Seoul National University, Yonsei University, and KAIST All Drop in Rankings
China and Japan Rise Steadily in Rankings
South Korea's top universities continued to face a downward trend, according to the UK's university ranking organization Times Higher Education (THE).
On the 30th of last month (local time), THE released the 2024 Asia University Rankings. Since 2010, THE has published annual global university rankings based on indicators such as innovation, international diversity, learning environment, and research outcomes.
In this ranking of 739 Asian universities, Seoul National University dropped from 11th place last year to 14th this year, marking a decline for two consecutive years. Yonsei University also fell four places from 13th last year to 17th this year. KAIST declined for three consecutive years, moving from 13th in 2021, 14th in 2022, 17th in 2023, to 18th this year.
The top three positions remained unchanged from last year, held by Tsinghua University (China), Peking University (China), and the National University of Singapore (Singapore). Notably, Chinese universities dominated the top 10 with Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Fudan University ranking 7th and 8th respectively, and Zhejiang University placing 9th this year, making five Chinese universities in the top 10.
Japan also had five universities in the top 30. The University of Tokyo rose three places from 8th last year to 5th this year, Kyoto University moved up from 18th to 13th, and Tohoku University surged from 34th to 20th.
China had the most universities in the top 100, with a total of 33 institutions selected, followed by South Korea with 16 and Japan with 10.
Meanwhile, in the QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) World University Rankings by Subject, announced on the 10th of last month, only three departments from Korean universities ranked within the top 20: Seoul National University’s Chemical Engineering (16th) and Modern Linguistics (18th), and Yonsei University’s Social Policy/Administration (17th).
In contrast, Singapore had 51 subjects ranked in the top 20, with 29 departments in the top 10. China had 33 departments in the top 20, and Japan showed steady improvement with 16 departments ranked in the top 20, including five in the top 10, rising from the previous year.
