Sub Sponsor Woori Financial Championship Achieves 2 Consecutive Wins
May 2 Challenge for 2 Consecutive Wins at The CJ Cup Byron Nelson
Kim Juhyung, An Byeonghun, Kim Siwoo Also Compete in Sponsor's Tournament
World No. 37 Im Sung-jae aims for his second consecutive win at a sponsor tournament.
On May 2nd (local time), he will compete in the PGA Tour The CJ Cup Byron Nelson held at TPC Craig Ranch (Par 71, 7,414 yards) in Dallas, Texas, USA. A total of 156 players will compete for the total prize money of $9.5 million and the winner's prize of $1.71 million. This tournament was previously held as the AT&T Byron Nelson. CJ Group has agreed to be the title sponsor for 10 years starting this year until 2033. The winner will receive a trophy engraved with Hangul characters.
Im Sung-jae participated last week in the Korean Professional Golf (KPGA) Tour Woori Financial Championship (total prize money 1.5 billion KRW), sponsored by his sub-sponsor Woori Financial Group, and successfully defended his title for the second consecutive time. This week, he will compete in the tournament hosted by his main sponsor CJ Group. After finishing tied for 5th at The Sentry, his first PGA Tour event of the season, he had been in the lower ranks or missed the cut repeatedly. However, he has been on the rise with a tied 12th place finish at the PGA Tour RBC Heritage that ended on the 22nd and his domestic tournament victory. Nonetheless, jet lag and fatigue remain variables.
Korean players including Lee Kyung-hoon, who won back-to-back titles at the AT&T Byron Nelson in 2021 and 2022, as well as An Byeong-hun, Kim Joo-hyung, and Kim Si-woo, are also on the entry list. Defending champion Jason Day (Australia) is a strong favorite to win. He ended a five-year win drought by claiming the title at this tournament last year. He is currently world No. 1 with 13 PGA Tour wins in total. World No. 20 Jordan Spieth and No. 30 Will Zalatoris (both from the USA) will also join the field.
