2-Person Team Event Comeback Victory at Zurich Classic
Perfect Tee Shots on Final Day and Playoff Lead to First Win
‘Excellent Forgiveness’ TaylorMade Qi10 Driver
World No. 2 Rory McIlroy (Northern Ireland) has returned to his former form.
This year, he has participated in only nine PGA Tour events. On the 28th (local time), at the TPC Louisiana (par 72, 7,425 yards) in Avondale, Louisiana, USA, McIlroy teamed up with Shane Lowry (Ireland) to win the Zurich Classic, a two-man team event with a total prize of $8.9 million, defeating Chad Ramey (USA) and Martin Trainer (France) in a playoff. This marked his 25th career victory, his first in nine months since the Genesis Scottish Open last July.
McIlroy had a slow start this year. He failed to make a strong impression except for his win at the Zurich Classic. He mostly finished within the top 20 but was far from competing for titles. He was no match to stop Scottie Scheffler’s dominance. However, the Zurich Classic was different. Especially in the final day’s foursomes format (where two players alternate shots with one ball), he showcased his skills to the fullest.
On the last 18th hole (par 5), trailing Ramey and Trainer by one stroke, he delivered a perfect tee shot. He made a birdie on this hole, extending the playoff. In the first playoff hole, which continued on the 18th, he hit a powerful drive that landed on the fairway, easing the pressure on his partner Lowry. After making par on this hole, he smiled brightly.
McIlroy used a TaylorMade Qi10 driver. The loft was 9 degrees, and the shaft was a Fujikura Ventus Black 6X. The TaylorMade Qi10 driver is a new product released this year. It boasts the highest moment of inertia (MOI) in TaylorMade history at 10K. It features advanced lightweight materials such as an Infinity Carbon Crown, an oversized head design, carbon face technology, and a torque-control shaft, all enhancing forgiveness.
