On the 28th, Kim Do-eup, a member of the People Power Party, announced that he will not run in the upcoming next floor leader election scheduled for the 3rd of next month.
Kim, who secured his fourth term in the April 10 general election in Busan Gangseo, stated through a press release on the same day, "I will not run for floor leader."
Kim is a senior lawmaker who achieved his fourth term by running in Busan Gangseo during the 22nd National Assembly election. Along with Park Dae-chul, who is entering his fourth term, and Kim Seong-won, Song Seok-jun, Seong Il-jong, and Lee Cheol-gyu, who are entering their third terms, he has been consistently mentioned as a candidate for the next floor leader.
Kim, from the Yeongnam region and with a relatively mild pro-Yoon stance, emerged as a strong candidate for floor leader. He was evaluated as a figure who meets both criticisms that the party failed to speak up to the presidential office after the general election defeat and the fact that the party's mainstream is from the Yeongnam region.
The People Power Party will elect the first floor leader of the 22nd National Assembly on the 3rd of next month. Originally scheduled for the 10th, the date was moved up as the Democratic Party of Korea hastened its own floor leader election, seemingly to keep pace.
The shoulders of the next People Power Party floor leader will be heavy. They must handle basic National Assembly opening issues such as negotiation over the organization of the National Assembly, as well as manage the party atmosphere following the general election defeat. Tasks such as electing the next party leader and other leadership positions also remain.
