Reports of ground shaking in the eastern region of Jeju have prompted local authorities to launch an investigation, but the cause remains unknown.
According to the Jeju Fire Safety Headquarters, at around 10:17 a.m. on the 26th, a report was received from Tosan-ri, Pyoseon-myeon, Seogwipo City, stating that "a building is shaking." Subsequently, 13 similar reports were received from eastern areas including Sinheung-ri, Namwon-eup, and Gujwa-eup, Jeju City.
On online communities such as Jeju-area mom cafes, posts appeared saying, "I was sleeping in my parked car when it shook and woke me up," and "I felt the shaking while at home and hurried outside." There were no reports of damage to facilities or property.
Initially, Jeju authorities suspected that the shaking was caused by a flashbang training exercise conducted during a 2024 joint counter-terrorism drill involving related agencies near the Gujwa Gymnasium in Jeju City around the same time. However, it was ultimately confirmed that no flashbang training took place during this exercise.
The Jeju Police Agency, which participated in the drill, stated, "We did not detonate any flashbangs, and although a water cannon was used once around 10:50 a.m., there was no loud noise or vibration strong enough to shake the ground."
Furthermore, investigations revealed that there were no earthquakes or blasting operations by private companies observed during this period.
