Yeosu City Discusses Role of Southern Coast Southern Central Region at Carbon Neutrality Forum

Impact of Climate Change and Carbon Neutrality

Building the Foundation for Hosting COP33 in the South Coast and South Central Region

Yeosu City, Jeollanam-do (Mayor Jeong Gi-myeong) announced that it held the "2050 Carbon Neutrality Practice Forum" on the 25th at the Yeosu Chamber of Commerce and Industry Chamber Hall under the theme of "Carbon Neutrality in Korea and the Role of the Southern Coast and Southern Central Region."

Following last September's National Assembly forum, this second event was co-hosted by Yeosu City and the Carbon Neutrality Practice Solidarity Association as a platform for various discussions among institutions and companies to achieve "2050 Carbon Neutrality."

The forum was chaired by Lee Woo-beom, Executive Director of the Carbon Neutrality Practice Solidarity Association, starting with a keynote presentation by Oh Seong-nam, Special Professor at Soongsil University and member of the Seoul Eco Club. The discussion panel included Kim Yoo-hwa, Chairman of Yeosu City Urban Management Corporation; Kim Shin, Secretary General of Yeosu City and Yeosu Industrial Complex Joint Development Council; Kim Jong-il, Director of Jeollanam-do Carbon Neutrality Support Center; and Shim Jeong-hyun, ESG Operations Committee Chair of MG Yeosu Hallyeo Saemaeul Geumgo.

The main topics covered were the impacts of climate change and carbon neutrality, the carbon neutrality and ESG promotion status of petrochemical companies in Yeosu National Industrial Complex, and Jeollanam-do's carbon neutrality policy directions.

Notably, during this event, Yeosu City signed a mutual cooperation agreement with Yeosu City Urban Management Corporation, the Carbon Neutrality Practice Solidarity Association, and MG Yeosu Hallyeo Saemaeul Geumgo to promote the hosting of COP33 in the Southern Coast and Southern Central Region and the enrollment in the Carbon Neutrality Point system, reinforcing efforts to realize 2050 carbon neutrality.

In his welcoming remarks, Vice Mayor Kim Jong-gi stated, "I hope this forum serves as an opportunity to share experiences and knowledge about carbon neutrality and to explore the directions and roles of the Southern Coast and Southern Central Region as well as Korea's carbon neutrality." He added, "Based on this, we will definitely achieve the hosting of the 33rd United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP33) in the Southern Coast and Southern Central Region."
