'Gurogeori Park Underground Public Parking Lot' with 202 Spaces Established
Guro-gu (District Mayor Moon Heon-il)'s 'Guro Street Park Underground Public Parking Lot Construction Project' has gathered signatures from 34,889 residents.
The area around Guro Street Park has long been a source of inconvenience for residents, as visitors to the nearby International Food Culture Street often circle around due to a lack of parking spaces, and disputes among neighbors over parking issues have been frequent. In this area alone, over 3,200 illegal parking violations have been enforced in the past five years, highlighting the severe parking shortage.
In 2018, during the '2030 Seoul Living Area Plan Resident Participation Workshop,' residents officially proposed the construction of a parking lot. The project began the same year when 122 members of the Guro 5-dong Residents' Countermeasure Committee filed a collective complaint. The project involves constructing a total of 202 parking spaces underground beneath part of Guro Street Park (Guro-dong 50), with a total floor area of 7,313㎡ and a site area of 3,620㎡.
The district has explained the project to residents over several years through New Year's meetings and district administration white papers. During the 2023 basic plan establishment survey, 400 people, including park visitors and nearby vehicle owners, were surveyed, with 355 respondents (88.8%) petitioning for the construction of the parking lot.
Additionally, from December last year to January this year, 34,889 residents from seven Eulgu neighborhoods near the project site participated in signing in support of the parking lot construction. On the 16th, the district held a residents' briefing session to provide more detailed explanations about the project's background, the appropriateness of the site selection, and future plans.
The construction of the parking lot will not damage or eliminate the park above. Instead, it will be transformed into a new scenic spot in Guro-gu, featuring ▲an attractive garden full of variety ▲a green breathing path that delights the senses ▲and a meeting place for residents.
Currently, Guro Street Park is planted with 244 trees, including 55 king cherry trees. Trees that are too tall or short, or those in poor shape or growth condition, will be removed, while healthy trees will be transplanted to other parks within the district.
Furthermore, a multi-layered planting of king cherry trees, various shrubs, and herbaceous plants will create a beautiful landscape. Wooden decks, sculptural benches, pergolas, and outdoor tables will be installed to allow residents to enjoy nature and relax.
Traffic accident risks during parking lot entry and exit will be minimized through careful design, and crime prevention measures such as lighting and CCTV will be incorporated into the security design.
Once the parking lot is completed, residents are highly anticipating being able to park in the public lot and enjoy walks in the street park and along Dorimcheon Stream.
A Guro-gu official stated, “The project site is located between the western residential area and the northeastern International Food Culture Street, which will not only meet parking demand but also alleviate illegal parking nearby, reducing traffic accident risks. We will also create a green space above that provides residents with a pleasant and safe environment to relax.”
