Nigerian local daily Vanguard reported on the 25th (local time) that 119 inmates collectively escaped after part of a prison facility collapsed due to heavy rain.

According to the report, part of the facility including the prison wall at Suleja Prison in Niger State, located 55 km west of the capital Abuja, collapsed after several hours of heavy rain the previous night. Suleja Prison spokesperson Adamu Duja stated in a press release that day, "A total of 119 inmates escaped. So far, 10 have been recaptured and detained, and efforts to track down the remaining escapees are ongoing."

In this regard, Reuters reported, "The statement did not disclose the identities or affiliations of the escaped inmates, but members of the Islamic extremist armed group Boko Haram have been imprisoned at Suleja Prison."

It added, "Nigeria has many old, dilapidated, and vulnerable correctional facilities, and efforts are underway to modernize them."
