Ulsan Mipo National Industrial Complex Transforms into a 'Self-Sufficient' Smart Industrial Complex

Ulsan City Selected for 'Energy Self-Sufficiency Infrastructure Project'

41.9 Billion KRW Invested Including 20 Billion KRW National Funding by 2026

Expansion of Hydrogen Fuel Cell Power Generation and Solar Renewable Energy

Ulsan City is transforming the Mipo National Industrial Complex into a self-sufficient energy green industrial complex.

On the 25th, Ulsan City announced that the Ulsan Mipo National Industrial Complex was finally selected in the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy's contest for the 'Energy Self-Sufficiency Infrastructure Construction and Operation Project,' securing 20 billion KRW in national funding.

This project aims to realize carbon reduction and zero-carbon transition in the Ulsan Mipo Industrial Complex by promoting the distribution of renewable distributed power sources and establishing an integrated energy management system to implement a self-sufficient energy demonstration complex.

The project will be carried out over three years from this year until 2026, led by S&I Corporation, with participation from Ulsan Technopark, Ulsan Ecological Industry Development Center, Lotte SK Enerute, S-Energy, RMS Platform, and IT Space.

Following the contest selection, a total project cost of 41.9 billion KRW (20 billion KRW national funding, 1 billion KRW city funding, and 20.9 billion KRW private investment) will be invested.

The main projects include △ by-product hydrogen-based fuel cell power generation △ solar power generation △ establishment of an ESG energy specialized internet platform △ support for tenant companies' carbon reduction.

By utilizing by-product hydrogen generated from petrochemical process by-products and waste heat from fuel cell power generation, and leveraging an industrial symbiosis map based on ecological industry development, the project will lead a circular economy.

An official from Ulsan City said, “We plan to transform the Mipo Industrial Complex into a smart green industrial complex, spread a digital-based zero-carbon energy self-sufficiency model, and establish a foundation for activating distributed energy.”
