Grandmother's Car Carrying 2-Year-Old Granddaughter Overturns After Terrifying High-Speed Chase... Sudden Acceleration Again?

Amid a series of recent suspected sudden unintended acceleration incidents, an accident occurred in Haman, Gyeongnam, where a woman in her 60s lost control of a vehicle carrying her two-year-old granddaughter, causing it to suddenly speed down the road and overturn.

According to the Haman Police Station on the 25th, at around 1:17 p.m. on the 17th, an SUV that had just started moving after waiting at a signal in front of the 119 Safety Center in Chilwon-eup, Haman-gun, collided with the car in front and then drove into the opposite lane.

After driving in the wrong direction, the vehicle returned to its lane and sped for 1.3 km up to the Mureung Intersection in Chilwon-eup, hitting traffic signs and curbs consecutively before overturning and crashing into a rice field.

As a result of the accident, the driver, Ms. A, in her 60s, suffered broken ribs, and the 2-year-old girl, Ms. B, who was also in the vehicle, was injured.

Six nearby vehicles sustained minor damage from debris caused by the initial collision and the impact with traffic signs, but no casualties were reported.

The vehicle involved in the accident was a new car that had been released just two weeks prior, and it is known that the accident distance was covered in 49 seconds.

The police, following the driver’s claim that the brakes were not applied, sent the vehicle’s Event Data Recorder (EDR) and black box to the National Forensic Service for analysis to determine if there was any vehicle malfunction.

Additionally, the police are investigating the exact circumstances of the accident by securing more closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage from the surrounding area.
