Baden-W?rttemberg Police Department Initiates Investigation
A man wielding a weapon and causing a disturbance on a university campus in Germany was shot dead by police.
According to the daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ), the suspect reportedly attacked a university staff member with a machete near the economics department library at Mannheim University around 5:30 PM local time on the 23rd.
Police who arrived at the scene subdued the suspect by shooting him after he also threatened the officers. The suspect was transported to a hospital but died. The 31-year-old German national from Saarbr?cken had previously been banned from entering the library due to repeated inappropriate behavior, police said.
The Mannheim police stated that the situation became threatening to the officers as well, leaving them no choice but to use their firearms. The higher authority, the Baden-W?rttemberg State Police Headquarters, has launched an investigation into the suspect’s motive and whether the police’s use of firearms was appropriate.
