Catching Mosquitoes Smartly... Gwangjin-gu Installs Digital Mosquito Meters Guui Park

Gwangjin-gu (District Mayor Kim Kyung-ho) has installed three Digital Mosquito Surveillance (DMS) devices to carry out effective mosquito control activities targeting mosquitoes, which are vectors of infectious diseases in urban areas.

The Digital Mosquito Surveillance device attracts mosquitoes by emitting carbon dioxide and then captures them to monitor the mosquito population. When the data on the number of captured mosquitoes is transmitted to the system via internal sensors, the pest control officers can regularly check the information to effectively determine the timing and scope of disinfection activities.

This year, fully funded by the district, mosquito surveillance devices were installed at three locations: Ginkgo-rang Park, Guui Park, and the Jungnangcheon embankment walking trail. The installation prioritized locations with high mosquito populations and favorable habitats based on mosquito trapping devices and consultations with pest control experts.

The district will operate the Digital Mosquito Surveillance devices from April to October. Each week, if the data collected by the devices reaches the ‘Interest’ level or higher according to the mosquito forecast system, pest control activities will be initiated within 200 to 300 meters around mosquito habitats. The mosquito forecast system classifies levels based on the number of mosquitoes captured: Level 1 (0?24, Comfortable), Level 2 (25?49, Interest), Level 3 (50?74, Caution), and Level 4 (75 or more, Unpleasant).

Kim Kyung-ho, Mayor of Gwangjin-gu, said, “We expect that systematic data will enable effective pest control disinfection,” adding, “We will strive to minimize inconvenience to residents by using eco-friendly pest control methods that achieve optimal effects while minimizing the use of chemical pesticides.”
