Area Increased by 25%, Annual Capacity Increased by 32%
The international terminal at Gimhae Airport has been expanded, increasing its annual passenger capacity from 6.3 million to 8.3 million.
On the 24th, Korea Airports Corporation announced that the expansion of the Gimhae Airport international terminal has been completed and will officially begin operations on the 26th.
Since 2019, with an investment of 82.1 billion KRW, the expansion project has increased the terminal area from 72,027㎡ to 89,782㎡, a 24.6% increase. The annual passenger capacity will rise by 31.7%, from 6.3 million to 8.3 million.
Passenger processing facilities have also been increased. Additional facilities include ▲30 check-in counters ▲3 identity verification stations ▲1 security screening station ▲2 departure inspection counters ▲3 boarding gates. The time required from check-in to identity verification, security screening, departure inspection, and boarding is expected to be reduced.
The newly established arrival terminal (1st floor), separated from the existing terminal, includes a new immigration hall with ▲4 quarantine inspection stations ▲11 immigration inspection counters ▲2 baggage claim belts ▲5 customs inspection counters. Operating hours are busiest from 6:00 AM to 9:00 AM.
The new departure terminal (2nd floor) is connected to the existing terminal. Considering operational conditions, passenger share, and airline opinions, the regional hub airline Air Busan will be the first to move in. Additional allocations will be made for new foreign airlines in the future.
During this summer season (March 31 to October 26), Gimhae Airport plans to operate 1,016 weekly international flights on 38 routes across 11 countries. This corresponds to 82.3% of the 2019 level. New long-haul routes to Indonesia (Jakarta, Bali) and others are expected to launch in the second half of the year, and international passenger demand is anticipated to recover to pre-COVID-19 levels by the end of the year.
Yoon Hyung-jung, President of Korea Airports Corporation, said, "Based on the expansion of the Gimhae Airport international terminal, we will actively promote the enhancement of passenger convenience and the activation of international flights, including the launch of medium- and long-haul routes in the second half of the year."
