Intensive Crackdown on Truck Maintenance Deficiencies and Traffic Violations

The Jeonbuk Police Highway Patrol Division 12th District recently announced on the 24th that due to the nationwide occurrence of major traffic accidents caused by cargo truck safety negligence, they conducted a joint crackdown with the Korea Transportation Safety Authority and the Buan branch of the Korea Expressway Corporation at the Julpo Tollgate, where cargo truck traffic is frequent.

On the 24th, the 12th District Highway Patrol Unit of the Jeonbuk Police conducted a joint crackdown with the Korea Transportation Safety Authority and the Buan Branch of the Korea Expressway Corporation at the Julpo Tollgate, where freight truck traffic is frequent, following recent nationwide major traffic accidents caused by freight truck safety negligence.

According to statistics from the 12th District, 52.8% of traffic fatal accidents within their jurisdiction last year were related to cargo trucks. It was found that 66% of traffic accident fatalities were either cargo truck drivers or passengers.

On this day, the police focused on cracking down on all violations related to cargo trucks, including failure to wear seat belts under the Road Traffic Act, violations of load fall prevention, cargo overloading, and illegal structural modifications of cargo trucks under the Motor Vehicle Management Act. Additionally, they distributed aged rear reflective materials for cargo trucks and conducted promotional activities for safe driving and prevention of drowsy driving.

Im Taek, chief of the Highway Patrol Division 12th District, stated, "Poor maintenance and improper loading are among the major causes threatening road traffic safety," adding, "We plan to continue traffic safety activities in collaboration with related organizations."
