Opening of the Korea-Germany Industrial Technology Cooperation Center at Fraunhofer

Expansion of Collaboration in Digital Transformation and Beyond

On the 23rd, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced that it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between Platform Industrie 4.0, a public-private joint organization promoting the German government's Industry 4.0 policy in Hanover, Germany, and the Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology (KIAT).

Through this MOU, the two countries agreed to jointly research industrial data standards and shared utilization systems in fields such as chemicals, machinery, and automobiles, which are planned to be promoted on Germany's industrial data platform Manufacturing-X, and to expand cooperation across policies by sharing successful cases related to industrial digital transformation.

On the 24th, the Korea-Germany Industrial Technology Cooperation Center was inaugurated at the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute in Berlin. Fraunhofer is one of the six global industrial technology cooperation centers selected by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy in early April.

The cooperation center plans to design and carry out challenging research and development (R&D) projects by utilizing a network of 76 research institutes in advanced industrial fields such as mobility, batteries, and semiconductors. Additionally, it plans to support the commercialization of developed technologies through information provision, local support for domestic companies, and pre/post feasibility studies.

The Ministry also decided to cooperate with Germany on certification regarding industrial AI safety and reliability, which industrial AI solution providers cite as difficulties when dealing with overseas companies. The Ministry signed an MOU between the Korea Testing Laboratory (KTL) and the German Association for Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies (VDE) to jointly develop industrial AI testing methods according to international standards and to expand mutual recognition of test results.

Oh Seung-cheol, Director of the Industrial Base Division, stated, "Establishing an industrial data cooperation system with Germany, a manufacturing powerhouse in Europe, will serve as a foundation to accelerate the digital transformation of our industry in the right direction." He added, "Since the Fraunhofer Institute is the institution with the greatest cooperation demand from our companies, we will support the discovery of various cooperative projects between companies and research institutes of both countries."
