Dongjak-gu Launches Major Gutter Cleaning to Prevent Flood Damage

Dongjak-gu (Mayor Park Il-ha) will conduct a thorough cleaning of all rainwater drains across the district on the 29th to prevent flood damage and create a clean urban environment this summer.

The district announced that it will strengthen management of all rainwater drains in 15 flood-prone areas, starting with the vicinity of Kkachi Children's Park in Sadang 1-dong.

Rainwater drains function to smoothly channel rainwater into stormwater pipes. Through this cleaning, the district aims to take preemptive measures to prevent household waste such as fallen leaves and cigarette butts from blocking the entrances of rainwater drains and to prepare for natural disasters like flooding.

About 1,000 participants, including residents from each dong community center, relevant departments, and affiliated organizations, will patrol and clean 23,723 rainwater drains and focus on special management routes in each dong.

They will remove sediment, cigarette butts, and other waste deposits inside the drains and collect illegal covers such as vinyl mats, rubber sheets, and plywood.

Additionally, together with seven safety organizations including the Autonomous Disaster Prevention Corps and Village Safety Volunteer Groups, they will inspect the installation status of flood barriers and conduct a comprehensive check of flood prevention facilities.

For participating residents and various organizations, the district will provide guidance and hands-on experience on the use of pumps and flood prevention facilities to enhance response capabilities against localized heavy rain.

Furthermore, dredging work will be carried out using vacuum suction methods on six main routes totaling 12 km in flood-prone areas, deploying three suction dredgers and three trucks.

The main routes include ▲Sadang-ro 1.5 km ▲Dongjak-daero 2.6 km ▲Hyeonchung-ro 2.2 km ▲Sangdo-ro 3.7 km ▲Siheung-daero 1 km ▲Jangseungbaegi-ro 1 km.

Alongside this, the district will conduct a ‘Flood Disaster Prevention Campaign’ focusing on flood-prone areas such as Sadang 1 and 2-dong and Sangdo 3 and 4-dong, promoting the installation of flood prevention facilities, enrollment in flood insurance, and installation of water barriers.

Park Il-ha, Mayor of Dongjak-gu, emphasized, “We recognize the importance of rainwater drains in preventing flooding and are doing our best to inspect and clean them. We will continue to manage rainwater drains and sewer pipes to create a safer Dongjak.”
