The 'Smart Green City' project aims to address issues such as rapid urbanization, urban heat island effects, and flooding in old downtown areas. It was selected for the Ministry of Environment's Smart Green City contest in 2020. From 2021 to last year, the city constructed five rainwater green infrastructures (LID) and 1.3 km of urban streams in the Tongbukcheon watershed, including Bijeon, Tongbuk, and Segyo districts, completing the project in January this year.

LID (Low Impact Development) refers to facilities that reduce rainwater runoff through infiltration, evaporation/transpiration, and reuse by expanding green and ecological spaces in urban areas. To this end, the city installed permeable blocks, retention boundary blocks, vegetative gardens, and rainwater gardens in the Tongbukcheon watershed. Additionally, the city created urban streams to reuse treated public sewage discharge water once more within the city.

Mayor Jeong said, "This Smart Green City project is a pilot case presenting a model that comprehensively solves environmental problems faced by modern urban areas," and added, "It is expected to greatly help solve environmental issues in Pyeongtaek City going forward."

Meanwhile, through an environmental effect evaluation service for the Smart Green City construction project, the city plans to review the effects on reducing rainfall runoff and non-point source pollution, as well as soil moisture content, addressing climate change issues.
