West Sea Coast Guard Agency Holds Practical Council Meeting to Prevent Fishing Boat Capsizing Accidents

On-site Feedback, Sharing Ideas for Accident Prevention and Work Progress

The West Sea Regional Coast Guard Agency (Commissioner Kim In-chang) announced on the 23rd that it held a practical council meeting for the prevention of fishing vessel capsizing accidents, with external members from academia and ship design participating.


According to the West Sea Coast Guard Agency, on the 22nd, a practical council meeting for the prevention of fishing vessel capsizing accidents was held in the main conference room, consisting of a total of 11 members: 5 internal members and 6 external members from Mokpo National Maritime University, Korea Maritime Safety Authority (KOMSA), Small and Medium Shipbuilding Research Institute, and Korea Comprehensive Design Co., Ltd.

This meeting strengthened the practical council by appointing two experts in maritime law and ship design as external members, explained the current status and cause analysis of accidents, the purpose of operating the practical council, and presented matters related to domestic fishing vessel stability accident prevention measures.


In addition, various opinions from experts in each field were heard, and ideas for accident prevention were proposed, leading to in-depth discussions to establish countermeasures.


The practical council for the prevention of fishing vessel capsizing accidents was held with the purpose of spreading a safety culture by informing maritime workers about the stability and risks of fishing vessels, eradicating illegal activities, and publicizing the need for institutional improvements to strengthen fishing vessel stability.


A representative of the West Sea Coast Guard Agency said, “Many capsizing accidents occur due to the loss of stability caused by habitual overloading and illegal modifications of fishing vessels,” and added, “We will do our best to actively utilize the practical council for the prevention of fishing vessel capsizing accidents to spread a prevention-oriented maritime safety culture.”
