Support for Learning Gaps: 'Busan-Origin Public Education Change'
The Busan Metropolitan Office of Education (Superintendent Ha Yun-su) announced on the 23rd that it will operate the WeCanDo Seasonal School at 13 hub schools for 1,170 first-year middle school students over three weeks starting July 22.
This seasonal school is part of the Busan-type Education Development Special Zone project called the Academic Change (體仁智) Project, designed to intensively support the learning gap period of first-year middle school students, who are the target grade for responsible education, in order to enhance the competitiveness of public education.
Students will study a total of 78 sessions of subject-themed lectures in Korean, Mathematics, and English over three weeks, along with 12 sessions of career experience and special thematic lectures. Additionally, programs to strengthen learning motivation and field trips will be conducted.
During the 2024 summer vacation, 13 hub schools will be operated across five educational support offices in the Busan area to allow more students to participate than last winter. The Office of Education will cover all costs involved in the entire process, including shuttle bus operation, production and distribution of textbooks for each course, and lunch.
The WeCanDo Seasonal School held during last winter vacation was operated at Yeongdo Jeil Middle School for 150 students, and according to the Office of Education’s survey, it showed a satisfaction rate of 91.6% among participating students and 92.2% among parents.
Ha Yun-su, Superintendent of Busan Metropolitan Office of Education, said, “The WeCanDo Seasonal School will greatly help improve individual academic achievement through customized educational support for first-year middle school students,” and added, “We will strive to eliminate educational disparities and reduce private education expenses to achieve a public education change originating from Busan.”
