"Autopsy Conducted to Determine Exact Cause of Death"
It was recently revealed that Taebaek, a Siberian tiger classified as a first-class endangered wild animal, has died at Seoul Grand Park.
Seoul Grand Park announced on its official website that Taebaek, born on May 2, 2018, as one of four siblings along with Baekdu, Halla, and Geumgang, passed away on the 19th. Taebaek had been living with Baekdu and had been receiving medical treatment since February due to poor stool condition, but recently his food intake sharply decreased and his activity level significantly dropped.
Seoul Grand Park stated, "As Taebaek became increasingly lethargic and emaciated, ensuring he could eat properly was our top priority, so we tried various foods and methods along with medication," adding, "However, from April 2, his food intake became minimal, and we ultimately decided on treatment and a health check under general anesthesia on April 15."
They continued, "As a result, it was confirmed that his biliary system and liver functions were significantly deteriorated, and corresponding medication and fluid therapy were administered." Acute hepatobiliary disease can occur in felines of various ages. However, due to the nature of predatory animals, continuous general anesthesia and aggressive fluid therapy are difficult. Despite consistent treatment, Taebaek's health did not improve, and he passed away.
Seoul Grand Park said, "An autopsy was conducted to determine the exact cause of Taebaek's death, and additional precise diagnostics are being carried out in cooperation with external institutions," adding, "The sudden news of Taebaek's death has been a difficult time for the zookeepers and zoo staff." A memorial space for Taebaek will be set up in front of the tiger enclosure in the carnivore house for seven days from the 22nd to the 28th.
Meanwhile, the Siberian tiger is the largest among tiger species and is currently classified as an endangered species, listed on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List.
