On the first day of his overseas trip, June 21, Lee Jang-woo, Mayor of Daejeon, visited Nanjing, China, to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the sister city relationship and signed an agreement to strengthen exchanges between the two cities.

At the signing ceremony, Nanjing, a city of science and education, and Daejeon, an economic and science hub, promised to engage in closer exchanges and grow together as world-class cities.

At the subsequent 30th anniversary celebration, the design of a symbolic sculpture representing Daejeon to be erected in Nanjing’s International Friendship Park was unveiled. The sculpture was designed based on Daejeon’s iconic characters, Kkumdori and Kkumsuni, and the Korea Aerospace Research Institute located in Daejeon, featuring the Nuri rocket, an indigenous Korean satellite launch vehicle successfully developed by Korea, to promote Daejeon as a city of science in Nanjing.

Mayor Lee Jang-woo said, “I hope Mayor Chen Zhichang of Nanjing and the Nanjing performance troupe will attend the ‘Daejeon 0 O’clock Festival’ this coming August,” adding, “I look forward to meeting again on a midsummer night in Daejeon to share our strong friendship.”

Mayor Chen Zhichang of Nanjing responded, “Thank you for the invitation to the Daejeon 0 O’clock Festival. We will definitely send the Nanjing performance troupe to the upcoming festival.”

After the commemorative event with Nanjing, Mayor Lee Jang-woo met with Daejeon students studying at Nanjing University and visited the Buzi Miao tourist site to view the Daejeon Culture and Tourism Photo Exhibition.
