Nam-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, will expand its summer disinfection zones to five areas starting this year to ensure residents have a healthy summer, and will begin full-scale summer disinfection from next month.
On the 19th, Nam-gu stated, "Due to the large influx of population into Hyochon 1 and 2 districts and considering the environment of Daechon-dong, a mixed urban-rural area, we have newly reorganized these areas into a new zone," adding, "With the summer disinfection zones subdivided from the previous four to five, more efficient disinfection work will be carried out."
The reason for reorganizing the summer disinfection zones is to resolve the issue of the excessively vast coverage of the four zones compared to the total disinfection area of the 17 neighborhoods within the district.
According to data on the status of each zone, as of last year, the total disinfection area in the district reached 60.96㎢.
Zone 1 covers Yangnim-dong, Sajik-dong, Wolsan-dong, and Baegun 1 and 2-dong, totaling 3.1㎢; Zone 2 includes Juwol 1 and 2-dong and Wolsan 4 and 5-dong, covering 3.44㎢; Zone 3 consists of Bangnim 1 and 2-dong and Bongseon 1 and 2-dong, totaling 3.73㎢.
Notably, Zone 4, which includes Hyodeok-dong, Jinwol-dong, Songam-dong, and Daechon-dong, spans 50.69㎢, accounting for 83% of the district's total disinfection area.
Accordingly, to address the concentration in Zone 4, Nam-gu has completely reorganized parts of Zones 1 and 2 along with Zone 4, dividing the area into five zones for disinfection starting this year.
Zone 1 now comprises Yangnim-dong, Sajik-dong, and Baegun 1 and 2-dong; Zone 2 includes Juwol 2-dong, Wolsan-dong, and Wolsan 4 and 5-dong; Zone 3 remains unchanged.
Zone 4 groups Juwol 1-dong, Jinwol-dong, and Hyodeok-dong, while Zone 5 consists of Songam-dong and Daechon-dong.
With the expansion of summer disinfection zones, the personnel and equipment deployed for disinfection have also increased.
Nam-gu plans to recruit one additional company this year to focus on disinfection in the five zones, partnering with five disinfection contractors to conduct thorough disinfection activities for 120 days starting May 2.
The disinfection team will consist of 20 personnel, with four assigned to each zone. Equipment deployed on-site includes five vehicle-mounted power sprayers, 12 cart-type foggers, 18 manual sprayers, 13 portable sprayers, and 11 electric sprayers.
A Nam-gu official stated, "With the readjustment of disinfection areas, the size of each zone has decreased, allowing for more meticulous disinfection than before," adding, "Along with preventing infectious diseases, we will ensure that residents enjoy a comfortable life in a pleasant living environment."
Meanwhile, Nam-gu operates two separate disinfection task force teams composed of district office staff to promptly respond to disinfection-related complaints.
