Connecting the Disconnected Sections of the 2nd Gyeongin and 2nd Yeongdong Expressways
Mayor Lee Sang-il: "Focusing Administrative Efforts for Citizens' Convenience"
Yongin City in Gyeonggi Province is promoting the early construction of a privately funded highway connecting 'Uiwang~Yongin Mohyeon~Gwangju.'
On the 19th, Yongin City announced that it requested the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport to enable the early construction of the Uiwang~Yongin Mohyeon~Gwangju highway as part of the 'L-shaped 3-axis road network plan' to densely connect the entire city with highways and expressways. To this end, Mayor Lee Sang-il of Yongin recently sent a letter containing this request to Minister Park Sang-woo of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the city explained.
The city holds the position that for the L-shaped 3-axis road network plan, the early construction of this route is necessary along with the semiconductor highway currently underway (Hwaseong~Yongin Namsa, Idong~Anseong) and the Yongin~Seongnam highway.
This route is a highway proposed as a private investment project by GS Construction. It is planned as a 32 km long route connecting the disconnected sections of the 2nd Gyeongin Expressway and the 2nd Yeongdong Expressway. According to the plan proposed by the project side, five junctions, four interchanges (IC), and one rest area will be installed within the section.
The project completed the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's private investment feasibility study in March last year and is currently undergoing the subsequent strategic environmental impact assessment. After completing the strategic environmental impact assessment, a preferred negotiator will be selected through a third-party proposal announcement.
The city specifically plans to install Mohyeon IC near National Route 43 in Neungwon-ri, Mohyeon-eup, which is the Yongin city section. The city expects that once the IC is newly established, accessibility from the Yongin area to eastern and western regions such as Incheon, Anyang, Wonju, and Gangneung will be greatly improved. The city also plans to connect this road to the Sejong~Pocheon Expressway at the Opo junction (JCT), which is expected to aid north-south movement in the metropolitan area.
Mayor Lee said, "Expanding the road network is essential for the expansion of Yongin's semiconductor industry ecosystem and enhancing urban competitiveness," adding, "We will focus administrative efforts to ensure the smooth progress of the Uiwang~Yongin Mohyeon~Gwangju highway project."
