Lowest Public Opinion Rating Recorded in August 2022

President Yoon Suk-yeol's approval rating has plummeted to the lowest level since his inauguration. Public opinion has sharply deteriorated following the general election defeat.

According to the National Barometer Survey (NBS) conducted from the 15th to the 17th, surveying 1,004 men and women aged 18 and over nationwide via 100% telephone interviews using virtual mobile phone numbers, released on the 18th by polling firms Embrain Public, K-Stat Research, Korea Research, and Hankook Research, 27% responded that President Yoon is "doing well" in state affairs, while 64% said he is "doing poorly." The 27% approval rating is the lowest since President Yoon took office. The previous lowest record was 28% in the second week of August 2022.


An NBS official explained, "This survey result is the lowest approval rating since President Yoon's inauguration."

Compared to the previous survey conducted two weeks ago, positive evaluations dropped by 11 percentage points, while negative evaluations rose by 9 percentage points. President Yoon's approval rating had hovered in the mid-to-high 30% range since Lunar New Year but sharply declined after the general election.


Trust in government administration also fell, with those responding "trust" dropping by 9 percentage points to 31% compared to two weeks ago. Those responding "do not trust" rose by 9 percentage points to 65%.


Regarding party support, the People Power Party received 32%, the Democratic Party 32%, the Innovation Party 13%, the Reform Party 4%, New Future 1%, the Green Justice Party 1%, and 16% responded "no support for any party/don't know/no response." The People Power Party's support fell by 7 percentage points from the previous survey, while the Democratic Party's support rose by 3 percentage points.


Regarding the recent general election, respondents cited the most influential factors when voting as inflation and other livelihood issues at 30%, judgment on the ruling party at 20%, candidate controversies such as offensive remarks at 11%, judgment on the opposition party at 10%, medical school quota increase at 8%, the Australian ambassador controversy at 5%, and nomination scandals at 2%.
