Mirae Asset Venture Investment has attracted attention for expanding its AI company value chain investment portfolio by making an investment in ‘Upstage’.
Since the release of ‘Chat GPT’ developed by Open AI, ‘generative AI,’ which creates new content similar to existing content such as text, audio, and images, has gained attention, raising overall expectations for the AI industry and related industries.
The AI industry value chain consists of core processors such as GPUs and NPUs, foundation models represented by LLMs (Large Language Models), and applications utilizing these models. Mirae Asset Venture Investment has been rapidly making large-scale investments across the entire AI value chain.
Before investing in Upstage, Mirae Asset Venture Investment had already invested in ‘Cohere,’ a conversational AI model similar to ChatGPT, considered a competitor to OpenAI and backed by Google’s investment. It also invested in the Israeli company ‘BRIA,’ which developed a foundation model specialized in image generation AI solutions, and through this recent investment, expanded its portfolio to include domestic foundation models.
In addition to foundation models, it continues to invest in AI semiconductor companies, which are core infrastructure of the AI industry. First, it participated as the lead investor in the Series A round of ‘Rebellion,’ which develops NPUs, investing 5 billion KRW, and followed up with additional investment in the Series B round.
It also invested in another NPU company, ‘Sapeon,’ and ‘HyperXcel,’ which develops accelerators specialized for inference operations of large generative deep learning models. Additionally, ‘MetisX,’ which develops accelerators specialized for vector DB queries essential to eliminate the biggest drawback of generative AI, ‘hallucination,’ is also a key AI-related investment portfolio. Furthermore, it holds an investment portfolio across the semiconductor industry related to AI, including ‘Semifive,’ which provides platforms to efficiently and rapidly design and produce AI chips.
Among core AI application investment companies are ‘Moloco,’ an AI-based ad tech company, and ‘Mathpresso,’ which is developing and servicing the math domain-specialized language model ‘MathGPT’ together with Upstage. Also included is ‘OnPlatform,’ which exclusively distributes sports content through AI chatbots and has received investments from LVMH (Louis Vuitton Mo?t Hennessy) and Chanel, securing an investment portfolio spanning the entire AI industry.
So far, Mirae Asset Venture Investment has invested a total of 200 billion KRW across the AI ecosystem, and high investment performance is expected alongside the growth of the AI industry.
