LG Chem "Blue Carbon 'Jalpi' Habitat Expanded by 20,000㎡ in One Year"

Marine Ecosystem Restoration Project Achievements
"We Will Continue Our Social Responsibility"

LG Chem announced on the 18th that its marine ecosystem restoration project using Zalpye has achieved significant results in just one year.

LG Chem "Blue Carbon 'Jalpi' Habitat Expanded by 20,000㎡ in One Year"

Last year, LG Chem started a Zalpye habitat restoration project in collaboration with the Korea Fisheries Resources Agency, Thanks Carbon, and Hope Friends Kia Support to build a sustainable marine ecosystem. Zalpye is a type of seagrass that blooms underwater and is one of the three major marine carbon sinks known as "Blue Carbon," officially recognized by the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change).

The report released by LG Chem includes the current status and one-year achievements of increasing Zalpye survival rates through site surveys for habitat candidates, transplantation methods, monitoring using the latest technology, and continuous management. As a result of transplanting 50,000 Zalpye plants near Daegyeongdo off the coast of Yeosu, Jeollanam-do, in October last year, the Zalpye habitat area increased by about 20,000㎡, from 427,100㎡ to 447,180㎡.

LG Chem plans to transplant an additional 20,000 plants this year, expecting the Zalpye colony to expand to 10 hectares, equivalent to the size of 14 soccer fields, by 2026.

Lee Young-jun, head of LG Chem's CSR team, said, "We will actively promote the restoration of Zalpye habitats through monitoring and management based on cutting-edge scientific technology and fulfill our social responsibilities."
