Dongdaemun-gu Mayor Ilhyung Lee and Yongsan-gu Mayor Heeyoung Park Lead the Creation of 'Maeryeok Garden'
Various locations throughout Seoul are transforming into 'Paradises of Flowers' and 'Gardens of Flowers.'
This is because the Seoul Metropolitan Government is leading the creation of 'Attractive Gardens' across the city to make Seoul a more charming city.
Creation of 'Attractive Garden' at Cheongnyangni Station Plaza in Dongdaemun-gu
Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Lee Pil-hyung) held an event on the 16th to create an Attractive Garden at the plaza in front of Cheongnyangni Station.
The event was attended by various residents including Mayor Lee Pil-hyung, daycare children, families of people with mild dementia, university students from the Seoul Youth Center Orang, and gardeners from Dongdaemun-gu. Together, they planted flowers to beautifully fill the Attractive Garden at the plaza in front of Cheongnyangni Station.
Dongdaemun-gu plans to hold a garden festival throughout May to promote garden attractions along the route from 'Cheongnyangni Station - Flower Field of Knowledge - Cheongnyang Dream Forest (planned near Bapper and Sindap Elementary School) - Jungnangcheon Rose Garden.' The festival will offer various programs where people can escape their busy daily lives and enjoy rest and leisure in the gardens.
Mayor Lee Pil-hyung of Dongdaemun-gu, who attended the event, said, “Today is a meaningful day as we created an Attractive Garden at Cheongnyangni Station plaza, a place where countless people pass by, allowing residents to feel seasonal color changes.” He added, “We will create Dongdaemun-gu, a city of flowers full of diverse blossoms and overflowing charm.”
At the event, the district also planted flowers to reaffirm their commitment to integrity and conducted an anti-corruption and integrity campaign in one corner of the garden.
Yongsan-gu Creates 'Attractive Garden' at Yongsan Station Plaza
On the 16th at 2 p.m., Park Hee-young, Mayor of Yongsan-gu, visited the site of the Yongsan Attractive Garden creation to encourage participants and join in planting. The event included introductions of participating organizations, tree planting education, commemorative photos, explanation of the event’s purpose, and planting activities.
The Yongsan Attractive Garden is located in front of Yongsan Station at 421 Hangangno 2-ga. Approximately 5,000 plants including zelkova trees, cherry trees, spiraea, hydrangeas, and four-season roses were planted over an area of 5,700 square meters.
About 300 people participated on site, including gardeners from Haebangchon Village, citizen gardeners, garden artists, and members of the public-private-academic volunteer group Yongsan Dragons.
The space that housed a temporary screening clinic from December 2020 to April 2022 has been transformed into three themed gardens: ▲Yongsan Attraction ▲Climate Companion ▲Yongsan Dragons.
The Yongsan Attraction zone is a themed park expressing Yongsan and the Han River. The Climate Companion Garden was created by recycling plants discarded from households. The district collected pots last month, and gardeners from Haebangchon Village took charge of planting. About 80 members of the Yongsan Dragons public-private-academic volunteer group managed the Yongsan Dragons zone.
Mayor Park Hee-young of Yongsan-gu said, “The long lines that used to form at the temporary screening clinic in front of Yongsan Station have disappeared into history, and the area has been reborn as a low-carbon green space.” He added, “We will also strive to maintain and manage the Attractive Garden, which will become a gateway park for Yongsan and a beloved space for citizens along with the Parkway that opened last year.”
The district manages the Attractive Garden in collaboration with Haebangchon Village gardeners, who have cultivated gardens in Yongsan 2-ga and Huam-dong areas for five years since the 2019 Seoul International Garden Expo. They continue to create companion gardens for the vulnerable, gardens utilizing vacant houses, Itaewon streetscape projects, and spring flower plantings so that flowering plants and ornamental trees can be enjoyed anywhere in the area.
