20 New Pedestrian Signal Lights Installed This Year in Areas with Many Vulnerable Walkers Such as School Routes and Nursing Homes
Gangdong-gu (Mayor Lee Soo-hee) announced on the 18th that it will expand the installation of floor-type pedestrian traffic lights (hereinafter referred to as floor traffic lights) to create a safer walking environment.
Floor traffic lights are auxiliary traffic safety devices that provide additional signal information to pedestrians by lighting green and red pedestrian signals on the ground at the crosswalk waiting line. They help prevent pedestrian accidents caused by pedestrians crossing without noticing the pedestrian signal ahead. Especially at night or during rain, pedestrians can recognize the location of the crosswalk from a distance by seeing the floor lights, which helps prevent traffic accidents.
This year, the district plans to install 20 floor traffic lights in areas with many pedestrian vulnerable groups, including children's protection zones and major school routes such as Gangil Elementary School, Cheonil Elementary School, Goil Elementary School, Gangmyeong Elementary School, Godeok Kindergarten, Yesul Kindergarten, as well as areas like the Godeok Senior Welfare Center and Holt Gangdong Welfare Center.
Since 2020 until December of last year, the district has completed the installation of floor traffic lights at 145 crosswalks within Gangdong-gu, including children's protection zones, subway station areas, and senior protection zones. In particular, last year, the district secured a resident participation budget and expanded floor traffic lights to 50 additional crosswalks.
Jung Young-hwan, head of the Traffic Administration Division, said, “Since floor traffic lights are facilities that prevent pedestrian traffic accidents, we are focusing on installing them in places with many vulnerable pedestrians such as the elderly and children.” He added, “We will continue to do our best to expand traffic safety facilities to create a pleasant and safe walking environment.”
