Seoul Jung-gu (District Mayor Kim Gil-seong)'s representative festival, ‘Jeongdong Night Tour,’ is just over a month away, and its pre-events are receiving great responses.
‘Meet Every Day Jeongdong Night Tour’ is a pre-event of the Jeongdong Night Tour held over two days from May 24 to 25. It was organized to widely promote the modern history and atmosphere unfolding along the Deoksugung Stone Wall Road. It consists of ‘Preview Jeongdong Night Tour,’ where residents can experience the Jeongdong Night Tour course in advance, and ‘Visiting Jeongdong Night Tour,’ which exhibits the winning works of the Jeongdong Night Tour photo contest.
On the 17th, the Deoksugung Stone Hall hosted a ‘Special Guided Tour of Deoksugung Stone Hall’ by inviting the chairpersons of the Residents’ Autonomy Committee. Sixteen chairpersons toured the interior of Deoksugung Stone Hall while listening to the historian’s explanations.
One chairperson who participated in the tour said, “If the Stone Hall is this beautiful during the day, I really look forward to how much more beautiful it will be at night. On the day of the Jeongdong Night Tour, I will bring my family to enjoy the places I saw today together.”
Additionally, on the 13th, ‘Preview Jeongdong Night Tour with Children and Families’ was held. Fifteen people, including Holmes leaders, residents, and children, enjoyed the romance of Jeongdong-gil in spring with a cultural guide.
Comments such as “I was born and raised in Jung-gu, but there were so many things I didn’t know, so it was refreshing,” and “Seeing my child take such an interest in history made me, as a parent, think I should study together,” were shared. The event received positive reviews for being both fun and informative through historical explanations.
‘Preview Jeongdong Night Tour’ is now preparing for the ‘Tea Blending’ lecture at the Paejae Hakdang History Museum on May 3 and the ‘Jeongdong Tour with a Guide’ on May 11. Especially, the tour on May 11 was added for a second session due to requests from Holmes leaders and residents. This reflects the high satisfaction of residents with the ‘Preview Jeongdong Night Tour.’
The ‘Visiting Jeongdong Night Tour’ will also begin soon. It will exhibit 28 winning photos from the photo contest capturing the beauty of Jeongdong-gil and the romance of Jeongdong Night Tour, along with 10 past posters. From April 26 to May 6, the exhibition will be held at Myeongdong Art Breeze, and from May 7 to 23, it will meet residents at Donghwa-dong Jung-gu Education Support Center Iroum.
Kim Gil-seong, Mayor of Jung-gu, said, “We will widely promote the romance and beauty of Jeongdong-gil and create a Jeongdong Night Tour that residents can directly participate in and enjoy. We thank everyone for the great response to ‘Meet Every Day Jeongdong Night Tour’ and hope many people will join the Jeongdong Night Tour unfolding in a month.”
Meanwhile, Jeongdong Night Tour, started by Seoul Jung-gu in 2015, is Korea’s first cultural heritage night tour. Each year, more than 200,000 Seoul citizens and foreign tourists visit, and it has been benchmarked nationwide, making it a representative example of a successful local festival. Until 2018, the event was held every May and October, then operated by Seoul City, but last fall, after five years, it returned to Jung-gu’s care and achieved great success.
