ArteK is hosting Lee Jung-woo's solo exhibition "Perfect Dimension" until the 29th. Following a group exhibition at ArteK last year, the artist presents 29 new paintings in this solo show.

Fascinated since childhood by ancient ruins covered with mysterious secret codes whose meanings were unknown, the artist found it intriguing that similar geometric patterns appear in the footprints of humanity from ancient civilizations to the present day.

Captivated by these mysterious forms, Lee began to examine modern quantum mechanics theories alongside the traces left by ancient ruins. As a result, he discovered that geometric patterns represent cross-sections of space-time flowing in a spiral form, and he began to build his own artistic world with the expectation that this would provide answers to the mysteries of the universe and the meaning of life.

The artist repeats geometric motifs, patterns them on reflective fabric, and completes shapes such as grids, dots, and pillars by layering multiple coats using masking and stencil techniques. Recently, he has also applied silk screen printmaking techniques. The resulting fabric retains its physical properties, reflecting light and bearing creased marks.

Additionally, by erasing parts of the upper layers to reveal the base color or incorporating silk screen printing, he constructs densely layered works. Although the intricate geometric motifs appear to be born solely under clear plans and order, the artist actually enjoys the process itself and leaves traces of accidental discoveries made during the work.

Thus, Lee Jung-woo’s work generates a different visuality from conventional paintings completed by applying paint on canvas, and the lighting reflected by the work changes according to the viewer’s movement and position in sunlight and artificial light.

The artist talks about the subjects, materials, and physical properties he chooses and experiments with but maintains a contemplative attitude toward defining or concluding his work.

The perfect dimension he aims to reach is a dimension where answers to the mysteries of the universe can be found. Although it is never fully attainable, the audience can fully share the artist’s journey of persistent effort through his works.
