Seongdong-gu Manages Fine Dust with 'Nation's First' AI New Technology

Partnering with Local Social Venture Companies Highlighted at CES to Build AI Video Analysis-Based 'Fine Dust Map'
Enables Near-Real-Time Information for Low Fine Dust Routes and Focused Management of High Concentration Areas
Jung Won-oh, District Mayor, Pledges to Use Innovative Technology to Make Seongdong-gu More Comfortable

Seongdong-gu Manages Fine Dust with 'Nation's First' AI New Technology

Seongdong-gu, Seoul (Mayor Jeong Wono) is set to build a fine dust map using new artificial intelligence (AI) video analysis technology, becoming the first local government in Korea to do so.

Yellow dust, which occurs intensively every March and April, is known as a representative "unwelcome guest of spring" as it not only causes inconvenience in daily life but also affects respiratory health during seasonal changes due to the accompanying fine dust. Especially this year, due to the climate crisis, temperatures at yellow dust sources such as the Gobi Desert and Inner Mongolian Plateau are higher than average, and dry weather with very little precipitation is expected to cause more frequent yellow dust than usual.

Seongdong-gu judged that the single urban air monitoring station operated by Seoul City has limitations in providing localized real-time fine dust information throughout Seongdong-gu, and has been striving to find ways to provide residents with detailed and accurate fine dust information by specific areas.

The solution found is the new technology developed by the social venture company "DeepVisions," located within Seongdong-gu.

This technology measures fine dust concentration by performing deep learning with artificial intelligence (AI) on video data obtained from existing security cameras (CCTV).

Since Seongdong-gu plans to utilize security cameras (CCTV) already installed in the area, it expects to efficiently measure and deliver real-time fine dust information with a small budget, and plans to officially launch the service as early as July this year.

Once the service officially starts, residents will be able to check real-time fine dust information at their current location online and plan their outings by choosing more comfortable routes with lower fine dust concentrations in advance.

Seongdong-gu intends to use this service to identify areas with high concentrations of fine dust and habitual fine dust occurrence zones within the district, and to implement more effective fine dust reduction measures.

What is even more meaningful is that "DeepVisions" is a social venture company discovered through the "Seoul Forest Social Venture Expo," which Seongdong-gu has been hosting since 2017 to nurture and support social venture companies nationwide.

DeepVisions, which gained significant attention by winning the Excellence Award at the Social Venture Innovation Competition held during the 3rd Seoul Forest Social Venture Expo in 2019, has grown into a company that widely promotes the excellence of Korean technology worldwide, receiving the "CES Innovation Award" at CES 2024, the world's largest IT and electronics exhibition held in Las Vegas, USA, this January.

Jeong Wono, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, said, "I am honored that the fine dust information service applying innovative technology from a local social venture company discovered in the 'Smart Inclusive City' Seongdong-gu is being implemented for the first time among local governments nationwide." He added, "We will continue to do our best so that Seongdong residents can live in a more comfortable environment through the provision of previously unavailable close-range, real-time fine dust information and efficient fine dust reduction measures utilizing this information."
