Japan to Begin Second Year of Fukushima Contaminated Water Discharge on 19th

Plan to Release a Total of 55,000 Tons Over 7 Sessions This Year

Japan will begin discharging contaminated water from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in the current fiscal year.

On the 17th, Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) announced that it will start the second-year discharge of contaminated water from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant from the 19th. TEPCO stated that, ahead of the ocean discharge of contaminated water treated by the Advanced Liquid Processing System (ALPS), samples were taken from tanks used for measurement and verification, and analysis confirmed that the standards were met.

TEPCO has planned to discharge a total of 54,600 tons of contaminated water over seven times during the 2024 fiscal year (April 2024 to March 2025). The first discharge of this cycle is scheduled to continue until May 7, with each discharge amount remaining the same as before at 7,800 tons, according to Kyodo News.

Previously, TEPCO began the first ocean discharge in August last year and released approximately 31,200 tons of contaminated water over four discharges in 2023 into the sea in front of the Fukushima nuclear power plant.
