The 2027 National Sports Festival to be Held in Gyeonggi-do... First Time in 16 Years Since 2011

Gyeonggi Province has successfully secured the hosting rights for the '108th National Sports Festival in 2027.'

On the 17th, Gyeonggi Province announced that the Korea Sports Council recently held a board meeting and confirmed Gyeonggi Province as the host city for the 2027 National Sports Festival. Accordingly, the 2028 National Youth Sports Festival and the 2029 National Sports for All Festival will also be held sequentially in Gyeonggi Province.

Starting from August last year, Gyeonggi Province conducted a public contest among cities and counties within the province to attract the National Sports Festival, selecting Hwaseong City as the main host city. Subsequently, in November last year, the 'Application for Hosting the National Sports Festival' was submitted to the Korea Sports Council through the Gyeonggi Sports Council.

In January this year, the Korea Sports Council conducted an on-site inspection of sports facilities in Hwaseong City and other venues within the province through the National Comprehensive Sports Festival Committee, and the board resolution confirmed Gyeonggi Province as the host.

Gyeonggi Province has previously hosted the National Sports Festival in 1964 (the 45th edition), as well as in Suwon in 1989 and Goyang in 2011.

Therefore, this will be the first time in 16 years since the 2011 festival that Gyeonggi Province hosts the National Sports Festival.

Gyeonggi Province explained that the successful bid for this festival is the result of the long-standing aspirations of sportspeople who believe that hosting the National Sports Festival is necessary to match Gyeonggi Province’s status as a leader in Korean sports, combined with the province’s enthusiastic response.

Namgung Woong, Director of the Sports Promotion Division of Gyeonggi Province, stated, "The decision to host the festival was made by Governor Kim Dong-yeon of Gyeonggi Province to respond to the hopes of all citizens for unity through sports and the aspirations of Gyeonggi’s sportspeople," adding, "We will do our best to prepare for the successful hosting of the 108th National Sports Festival together with the Gyeonggi Sports Council and Hwaseong City."
