Mokpo City and Sinan County Hold 2nd Interim Report Meeting for Joint Research on Integration Effect Analysis

Integrated City Administrative Convenience Expected to Reach 967.2 Billion KRW, Economic Ripple Effect Projected at 1.9 Trillion KRW

Number of Tourists Analyzed to Increase to 22 Million by 2027

Vision of ‘Marine Culture City Soaring to the World’ and Presentation of Win-Win Cooperation Tasks

On the 15th, Mokpo City held the 2nd interim report meeting on the ‘Mokpo-Shinan Integration Effect Analysis Research Service,’ jointly promoted with Shinan County. About 25 people attended, including the Mayor of Mokpo, the County Governor of Shinan, the Mokpo City-Shinan County Integration Promotion (Preparation) Committee members, city council members, and senior officials.

According to Mokpo City on the 17th, the report meeting presented research results on successful integration plans, including integration case analysis, resident opinion survey results, partial integration effect analysis, and the vision and win-win cooperation tasks for the integrated city. Various opinions on integration were also raised during the Q&A session with attendees.

Professor Kim Byung-rok of Mokpo National University, who was in charge of the research service, explained that the administrative integration effect showed administrative benefits of 973.5 billion KRW and costs of 6.3 billion KRW, indicating that the administrative benefits far outweigh the costs. The economic ripple effect was projected at 1.9 trillion KRW, and the number of tourists was predicted to increase to 22 million by 2027.

Additionally, the vision for the integrated city was set as ‘A Marine Culture City Soaring to the World,’ fostering renewable energy and the food industry as future growth engines. Core strategies and 11 win-win cooperation tasks were derived, including the establishment of a historical culture and marine ecological tourism platform, along with 26 detailed implementation tasks.

Attendees urged the research team to prepare concrete resident persuasion logic that addresses what tangible benefits local residents can feel and to resolve residents’ concerns.

Mayor Park Hong-ryul of Mokpo stated, “We must set an integration roadmap aiming for the launch of the Mokpo-Shinan integrated city on July 1, 2026, and complete step-by-step implementation tasks.” He added, “In the second phase, by achieving integration with Muan, we should realize economies of scale at the metropolitan level to respond to the crisis of local extinction.”

Governor Park Woo-ryang of Shinan said, “Based on major issues including the key benefits that Cheongju City conceded to Cheongwon County, which were codified in the special law and ordinance related to integration, we need to add various special cases for the Mokpo-Shinan integration and prepare resident persuasion logic to foster consensus on integration.”

The ‘Mokpo-Shinan Integration Effect Analysis Research Service’ will review and supplement various opinions presented at the 2nd interim report meeting, hold a final report meeting in early June including win-win tasks and future vision, and then conduct a resident briefing session.

Mokpo City and Shinan County shared the 2nd interim results of the Mokpo-Shinan integration effect analysis service, which they are jointly conducting.
