Planting of Over 5,000 Trees Including Ippangnamu and 20 Other Species in Yeonil-eup Area
Distribution of Persimmon, Peach, Mindureup Tree Seedlings, and Tulips to Citizens
On the 16th, Pohang City held the "Pohang Hope Forest Tree Planting" event along a 1km section from Nam-gu Yugang Water Purification Plant to the crosswalk in front of Yeonilhyanggyo under the slogan "A Green City Cultivated Together by Citizens' Hands."
About 1,500 Pohang citizens, including children and youth, related organizations, native and forestry groups, companies, and the Forestry Cooperative, participated in the event. Starting with a pre-ceremony performance by the choir of Jecheol Middle School and Ocheon Jeil Kindergarten, they planted over 5,000 trees of more than 20 species, including the Ipap tree, contributing to the creation of the Hope Forest.
The tree planting event took place in a buffer green area along the railway connected to the Pohang Railway Forest Win-Win Forest Trail. Alongside the dense Metasequoia trees, citizens planted a mixed and multi-layered forest with canopy trees such as Ipap and cherry trees, understory trees like Cornus officinalis, hibiscus, and pine, and shrubs such as red bayberry, aiming to create a lush urban forest.
The city expects that the creation of the urban forest will help reduce noise and dust along the roadsides and expand healing spaces where citizens can walk and relax in their daily lives.
After the tree planting event, participating citizens were given saplings of persimmon, peach, and Aralia elata, encouraging active interest and participation in making Pohang a livable green city.
Additionally, the Pohang Carbon Neutrality Support Center distributed tulip bulbs to participants, explaining the importance of the environment and fostering a shared understanding.
Mayor Lee Kang-deok stated, "For Pohang City to become a sustainable hub city of the East Sea, attracting new growth industries and creating a pleasant residential environment are important tasks." He added, "To respond to the climate crisis and achieve carbon neutrality, we will plant more trees and continue to expand relaxed green spaces that blend nature and the city close to daily life."
