National Mokpo University Selected as a Glocal University Preliminary Designated Institution

Leading Innovation in the 'Eco-friendly Carbon-free Ships and Green Marine Energy' Industry

National Mokpo University (President Song Ha-cheol) announced on the 16th that it has been selected as a preliminary designated Glocal University by the Ministry of Education for 2024.


On the same day, the Ministry of Education announced that a total of 109 universities nationwide submitted 65 innovation plans for the 2024 Glocal University preliminary designation application (14 universities submitted 6 joint applications based on integration, 56 universities submitted 20 joint applications based on alliances, and 39 universities applied individually), and as a result of the preliminary designation evaluation, a total of 20 innovation plans (from 33 universities) were selected.

The innovation plan of National Mokpo University, which was preliminarily designated this time, includes a bold innovation vision of becoming a global university leading the innovation of the 'eco-friendly zero-carbon ship and green marine energy' industry, under which it has established innovation strategies such as △ fostering a global Only-1 research center that leads regional industries to the world’s highest level △ providing a global Only-1 curriculum through collaboration with global companies △ creating a global science park as a growth hub for Jeonnam’s future industries based on the green marine energy sector △ attracting excellent foreign students linked with prestigious overseas universities and supporting their settlement in the region △ and advancing as a hub university for nurturing marine-specialized global talent through integration with Jeonnam Provincial University.


President Song Ha-cheol, who oversaw the Glocal innovation plan, said, “Based on the world-class capabilities possessed by National Mokpo University, we aim to transform the regional industry into eco-friendly zero-carbon ships and green marine energy industries.” He added, “We also plan to build capabilities to address regional labor shortages by verifying and attracting excellent foreign students through a study abroad system, and to support quality education and infrastructure for local high schools and universities for the regional higher education ecosystem.”


He continued, “As a representative base national university of Jeonnam, we will do our best to concentrate all the university’s capabilities until the final designation as a Glocal University, so that we can scale up the region’s main industries and start up future industries as a university.”


Meanwhile, the preliminary designated universities must establish and submit an implementation plan that concretizes the tasks included in the innovation plan together with local governments and regional industries by the end of July, and after the main designation evaluation, they will be finally designated as Glocal Universities by the end of August.
