The Court Sentences to 3 Months Imprisonment
A mother who spent child support received from her divorced husband on purchasing a luxury car and then ordered her son to get the money back was sentenced to prison.
On the 16th, the Gwangju District Court Criminal Division 1 (Presiding Judge Kim Hee-seok) sentenced A (47), who was indicted for violating the Child Welfare Act, to three months in prison. The court also ordered A to complete an 80-hour child abuse treatment program.
After divorcing her ex-husband, A spent 39.5 million won received from him under the pretext of a housing lease deposit on purchasing a Mercedes-Benz vehicle and living expenses while in the process of adopting their second child (13 years old).
However, when the money ran out, it was investigated that she and the child lived in a parked car from January to May last year. The two used the car as a place to sleep and also wandered around motels and hospitals.
Unable to receive further child support, A sold the car and leased a Grandeur vehicle instead, but eventually could not afford the costs. Afterwards, A is accused of having her son visit her ex-husband three times to collect money. Additionally, A is charged with secretly refueling seven times at an LPG station in Gwangju from March to May last year.
The court explained the sentencing by stating, "The defendant's abuse and neglect likely had an adverse effect on the growth of the victim child," but also considered "that A admitted her wrongdoing and showed remorse."
