Man Assaulting Goose in Konkuk University Lake
Animal Group "Reported for Violation of Animal Protection Act"

A man who assaulted a goose named 'Geongus' living in the lake at Konkuk University has been reported by an animal rights organization. Geongus is a combination of 'Geon' from Konkuk University and the English word 'goose,' and it is an animal loved as the mascot of Konkuk University.

The Animal Freedom Coalition announced on the 11th at around 3:30 PM that a man identified as Mr. A assaulted one of the geese residing in Ilgam Lake on the Konkuk University campus, causing injury. The organization stated, "Mr. A suddenly began to assault the Geongus. The geese, which have long been loved by people and are not very wary of humans, often approached people, and Mr. A started to use violence against these Geongus."

They continued, "We have reported Mr. A to the competent police station for violating the Animal Protection Act for inflicting violence like a carpet bombing on animals that were living peacefully in nature and harmoniously with humans, turning humans into beings to be feared in an instant." They added, "We also plan to conduct a thorough investigation on-site to check for any other acts of abuse and respond accordingly."

The video released by the organization shows Mr. A striking the head of one of the two Geongus. As Mr. A continued to hit the head, the impact caused the goose's head to hit the ground. Eventually, the Geongus bled due to the assault.

The organization stated, "We will make every effort to actively investigate and identify Mr. A so that he receives appropriate punishment, and to ensure that such violence is never again exposed to Geongus and other animals living in nature."

Netizens who learned of the incident expressed various reactions such as, "Why would someone do that in a public place?", "I hope he receives legal punishment," "There are all kinds of strange people. Why assault a goose?" and "It's sad that no one came to stop it while the goose was being hit."

Under the Animal Protection Act, anyone who causes injury to an animal by physical means can face up to two years in prison or a fine of up to 20 million won. Additionally, causing an animal's death without proper authorization or license can result in up to three years in prison or a fine of up to 30 million won.
