Yangcheon-gu Selected as the 'Best' Autonomous District for Sewerage Management

Yangcheon-gu (District Mayor Lee Gi-jae) announced on the 16th that it was selected as the "Best Autonomous District" in the "2023 Autonomous District Sewerage Management Evaluation" conducted by the Seoul Metropolitan Government targeting 25 autonomous districts.

This year's sewerage management evaluation was comprehensively conducted across 20 items in four areas: ▲budget and design ▲maintenance ▲construction ▲policy cooperation. As a result of actively promoting various projects such as proactive dredging work and building high-quality sewerage systems in Seoul, the district was honored to be selected as the best district this year following last year's award as an excellent district.

First, the district invested a budget of 21.4 billion KRW last year to repair aging sewer systems, establish various plans to improve sewer quality, and conduct safety inspections of sewer facilities.

Also, ahead of the full-scale rainy season, soil and debris inside sewer pipes were cleaned to improve sewer drainage functions and thoroughly prevent flood damage during the summer.

All employees completed sewer-related training hosted by the Seoul Metropolitan Government, which not only improved construction quality but also minimized citizen inconvenience caused by sewer construction. In particular, by strengthening safety measures and making every effort to create accident-free construction sites, not a single safety accident occurred during construction.

Furthermore, the district received high evaluations for actively cooperating with Seoul Metropolitan Government’s policy projects by investing an emergency dredging budget of 500 million KRW secured from the city to dredge and clean 22 km of sewer pipes in flood-prone areas and about 7,000 stormwater inlets with potential flooding risks to improve sewer quality and prevent flood damage.

Meanwhile, the district recently launched a personal drainage facility inspection service to help vulnerable households, such as elderly residents living in semi-basement homes and people with severe disabilities, safely get through the summer. This year, a total project cost of 28.1 billion KRW will be invested to carry out large-scale cleaning of aging sewer pipes and sewer pipe maintenance.

In particular, with the full-scale reconstruction of Mokdong Apartments, the district plans to promote a comprehensive sewer maintenance plan project to establish a high-quality sewer system that can be used for over 100 years.

Lee Gi-jae, Mayor of Yangcheon-gu, said, "Since sewers and stormwater inlets are closely related to a clean urban environment, the efforts of the employees who worked hard to ensure safety seem to have borne good fruit," adding, "We will continue to create a safe Yangcheon without worries about flooding or odor through proactive dredging work and other measures."
