Songpa-gu Undertakes Major Maintenance of Hazardous Overhead Wires Threatening Safety... 3.4 Billion Won Invested

Songpa-gu, Seoul (Mayor Seo Gang-seok) announced on the 15th that it will invest 3.4 billion KRW this year to extensively repair defective aerial cables that threaten residents' safety. Defective aerial cables refer to communication lines tangled disorderly on utility poles, which not only damage the city's aesthetics but also pose a significant threat to residents' safety during moves, monsoons, or strong winds.

The district selected four priority areas for repair and will carry out the maintenance project by November this year. The target sites were chosen after collecting residents' opinions and conducting a demand survey on defective aerial cables at the end of last year.

The target areas are mainly residential neighborhoods with many abandoned lines: ▲Jamsilbon-dong ▲Seokchon-dong ▲Garak-dong ▲Macheon-dong. The targets include 2,040 utility poles and 900 communication poles that do not meet facility standards, with a total maintenance length of 77,072 meters. The repair will be conducted in collaboration with six telecommunications companies by bundling or removing tangled and sagging electric wires.

Songpa-gu secured an incentive of 700 million KRW by receiving a "top grade" in the "Local Government Aerial Cable Maintenance Performance Evaluation," reflecting last year's achievements and this year's plans, which allowed the budget to be expanded.

The district prioritized residents' safety and improved the maintenance procedures. After the completion of the aerial cable maintenance project, the person in charge will directly inspect the maintenance site at the start and completion of construction to evaluate the results and conduct regular joint inspections.

Additionally, Songpa-gu officials will participate in the research team activities related to aerial cable connections led by the Ministry of Science and ICT until June this year, contributing to establishing standards and improvement plans for underground aerial cable installation.

Seo Gang-seok, Mayor of Songpa-gu, stated, "We will actively repair aerial cables tangled and sagging in residential alleys that threaten residents' safety to improve the city's aesthetics and create a Songpa-gu where residents can live with peace of mind."
