Obesity Management for Residents at All Dong Community Centers in Gangdong-gu ‘Health 100-Year Consultation Center’

Gangdong-gu (District Mayor Lee Soo-hee) is taking the lead in managing obesity among residents through programs such as the "Body Fat Reduction Class" at the uniquely established "Health 100-Year Consultation Centers" located in every neighborhood across the district.

The district has installed and operates small health centers called "Health 100-Year Consultation Centers" in every neighborhood so that residents can receive health care close to home. Since 2022, it has been running a 12-week obesity management program with exercise specialists, nutritionists, and nurses to reduce the increase in obesity rates following the COVID-19 pandemic.

A total of 239 residents participated in the "Body Fat Reduction Class" program held in the first half of last year. As a result of the program, participants showed an average waist circumference reduction of 2.8 cm and a weight loss of 2.1 kg.

This change created a consensus among residents and served as an opportunity to establish healthy lifestyle habits.

In particular, participant A shared a positive change, saying, "Through the program, I realized not only that I had a lot of body fat but also that my blood sugar levels were high, putting me at risk for diabetes, which was quite a shock. After a retest three months later, I lost 4 kg, and my previously concerning blood sugar and cholesterol levels returned to normal, which made me very happy." A also mentioned that through the program, participating in a weight loss health club and sharing the learned dietary habits with family greatly helped improve not only their own but also their family's health habits.

This year, the district is continuing to operate the 12-week "Body Fat Reduction Class" program targeting residents with body fat percentages above the standard (women 30%, men 25%). The program provides comprehensive health management services, including basic health checkups, combined aerobic and anaerobic circuit training, and proper walking education to support residents' health improvement.

Additionally, residents who wish to continue health management after the program ends can register at the "Health 100-Year Consultation Center" to receive regular health consultations and participate in health club activities.

Lee Soo-hee, Mayor of Gangdong-gu, stated, "Obesity is a major cause of chronic diseases, but it can be sufficiently prevented through healthy lifestyle habits," and added, "We will continue to strive to create a healthy community environment by operating various health programs for our residents."
