Democratic Party's Moon Jin-seok Wins Re-election... "Will Follow the People's Mandate"

In the Chungnam Cheonan-gap election, which drew attention as a proxy battle between Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party, and President Yoon Suk-yeol, Democratic Party candidate Moon Jin-seok narrowly won re-election by a margin of 4,384 votes.

The Cheonan-gap election was a rematch of the 21st general election and attracted attention as a showdown between Moon Jin-seok, a close aide of Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party, and Shin Beom-cheol of the People Power Party, who served as the first Deputy Minister of National Defense under the Yoon Suk-yeol administration.

In the 21st general election, the result was decided by a mere 1,328 votes, making it the region's most fiercely contested district. In this election as well, the leadership of both parties visited multiple times to hold support rallies, concentrating their efforts.

As a result, Democratic Party candidate Moon Jin-seok received 64,562 votes, defeating People Power Party candidate Shin Beom-cheol, who garnered 60,178 votes, and secured his seat in the National Assembly once again. The candidates remained neck and neck with a vote difference of around 500 votes after the counting began, but after 3 a.m., Moon's side widened the gap and claimed victory.

Moon Jin-seok said, "I believe my victory today is the people's mandate to change the reckless policy direction of the Yoon Suk-yeol government and to take the lead in setting the Republic of Korea on the right path," adding, "I will change the regressive policy direction of the Yoon Suk-yeol government and revive the livelihood of the people."

He continued, "Every day, together with the citizens of Cheonan, I will do my best, thinking only of Cheonan's development, and repay with the best results," expressing his gratitude upon winning.
