He attracted attention for his contest against Kim Seong-hwan, who was cut off in the Democratic Party primary and ran as an independent, but comfortably outpaced candidate Kim (17.3%).

Park Eun-sik, the People Power Party candidate, received 8.29%, Kim Mi-hwa of the Progressive Party 3.32%, and Jang Do-guk of the Reform New Party 1.49% of the vote.

Ando-geol, the elected candidate, is originally from Hwasun, Jeollanam-do. After graduating from Gwangju Dongsin High School and Seoul National University with a degree in Business Administration, he entered public service through the 33rd Administrative Examination in the Finance sector. He served as the Director-General of the Budget Office at the Ministry of Strategy and Finance, becoming the first person from Honam in 16 years to hold the position. He later served as the 2nd Vice Minister of the Ministry of Strategy and Finance.

Ando-geol said, “As I entered politics and campaigned, I promised to devote myself to fulfilling my duties as a ‘great worker’ and ‘great politician.’ I will become a ‘great worker’ who revitalizes the lagging Gwangju economy. I will foster future growth industries such as artificial intelligence, bio-medical, and cultural tourism to make the pulse of the original downtown, the heart of Gwangju, beat again.”

He continued, “I promise to create ‘Gwangju, a global luxury wealthy city,’ where venture companies line up to start businesses, hometown youths have jobs that allow them to eat home-cooked meals, and domestic and international tourists flock to see premium performances created at the Asia Culture Center.”

He also emphasized, “I will decisively resolve the long-standing pending projects in Dong-gu and Nam-gu, Gwangju. This includes expanding the entrance roads to the Sotae and Hakun ICs on the 2nd ring road, modernizing the outdated sewage treatment facilities, creating a comprehensive welfare town for the elderly, constructing a landmark parking tower in the original downtown, and digitizing the Chungjang Geumnam commercial district to dramatically improve the quality of life infrastructure for local residents.”

Furthermore, he stated, “I will become a capable ‘great politician’ who leads the Democratic Party in reviving the broken national economy and people’s livelihood, laying the foundation for regime change, and exerting influence over overall national governance including the allocation of national resources. I will restore Dong-gu, Gwangju’s status as the number one district in Honam politics and recover the pride of our citizens.”

He added, “I will always keep my original intention, walking steadily on the path that looks only to the citizens of Gwangju with passion and sincerity.”
