"I Will Accelerate Efforts to Address the Population Extinction Crisis"
Seo Samsok, the Democratic Party of Korea candidate who ran in the Yeongam-Muan-Shinan district in the 22nd National Assembly election, was elected.
As of 11 p.m. on the 10th, the vote count for the 22nd National Assembly general election in Yeongam-Muan-Shinan was 70.37%, with candidate Seo receiving 51,347 votes, securing 68.60% of the vote, defeating independent candidate Baek Jaewook, who received 16,046 votes, and his election was confirmed.

Out of 105,784 eligible voters in the Yeongam-Muan-Shinan district, 67,494 participated in the voting. The Democratic Party of Korea's Seo Samsok received 68.78%, People Power Party's Hwang Dunam received 4,638 votes (6.57%), Progressive Party's Yoon Busik received 1,861 votes (2.63%), Korea Farmers and Fishermen Party's Kim Palbong received 472 votes (0.66%), and independent candidate Baek Jaewook received 15,059 votes (21.33%).
Candidate Seo Samsok said, "I will accelerate efforts to respond to the population extinction crisis," adding, "I will re-pursue the legislative amendment to resolve the manpower shortage in rural farming and fishing villages and the establishment of a new Ministry for the Elderly to effectively respond to the aging society in the 22nd National Assembly, following the 21st."
He also stated, "I will ensure the smooth completion of ongoing regional development projects," adding, "I will strive to secure national budget funding for the revitalization of Yeongam Daebul Industrial Complex, timely opening of the KTX passing through Muan Airport, and the steady promotion of Shinan's land and island connection construction projects to ensure these projects proceed on schedule."
Candidate Seo Samsok was born in Muan, graduated from Chosun University Attached High School, and earned a bachelor's degree in Public Administration from Chosun University Law and Political Science College, a master's degree in Policy Studies from Chonnam National University Graduate School of Public Administration, and a Ph.D. in NGO studies from Chonnam National University Graduate School.
He is a three-term former Muan County governor and a two-term lawmaker elected in the 2018 by-election and the 2020 general election. He has served as the chairman of the Democratic Party of Korea Jeonnam Provincial Party Committee, deputy floor leader, senior secretary-general, and chairman of the Budget and Accounts Special Committee in the second half of the 21st National Assembly.
