'Old Boys' Return One After Another... Park Ji-won, Oldest Candidate

On the night of the 10th, as the vote counting for the 22nd general election was underway, the election of 15 candidates from the Democratic Party of Korea was confirmed. It appears that 'old boys' such as former National Intelligence Service Director Park Ji-won and former Minister Jeong Dong-young will successfully return.

According to KBS election results, as of 10:30 PM that day, with an overall counting rate of 46.24%, 15 candidates from the Democratic Party were predicted to be 'certainly elected.' All of them are from the Honam region, considered a stronghold of the Democratic Party, including 1 from Gwangju, 8 from Jeonbuk, and 6 from Jeonnam.


By electoral district, Jeong Jun-ho, candidate for Gwangju Buk-gu Gap (vote rate 83.73%), Jeong Dong-young, candidate for Jeonbuk Jeonju-si Byeong (81.31%), Shin Young-dae, candidate for Jeonbuk Gunsan-si Gimje-si Buan-gun Gap (86.60%), Lee Won-taek, candidate for Jeonbuk Gunsan-si Gimje-si Buan-gun Eul (87.06%), Lee Chun-seok, candidate for Jeonbuk Iksan-si Gap (76.76%), Han Byeong-do, candidate for Jeonbuk Iksan-si Eul (87.08%), Yoon Jun-byeong, candidate for Jeonbuk Jeongeup-si Gochang-gun (86.90%), Park Hee-seung, candidate for Jeonbuk Namwon-si Jangsu-gun Imsil-gun Sunchang-gun (84.34%), and Ahn Ho-young, candidate for Jeonbuk Wanju-gun Jinan-gun Muju-gun (83.37%) are likely to be elected in Gwangju and Jeonbuk.

Joo Cheol-hyun, candidate for Jeonnam Yeosu-si Gap (89.03%), Kim Moon-soo, candidate for Jeonnam Suncheon-si Gwangyang-si Gokseong-gun Gurye-gun Gap (63.71%), Kwon Hyang-yeop, candidate for Jeonnam Suncheon-si Gwangyang-si Gokseong-gun Gurye-gun Eul (69.01%), Shin Jeong-hoon, candidate for Jeonnam Naju-si Hwasun-gun (70.11%), Moon Geum-ju, candidate for Jeonnam Goheung-gun Boseong-gun Jangheung-gun Gangjin-gun (90.90%), and Park Ji-won, candidate for Jeonnam Haenam-gun Wando-gun Jindo-gun (92.79%) are also confirmed to be elected.


Park Ji-won, a representative 'old boy,' will become a five-term lawmaker if elected. Born in June 1942, he is also the oldest candidate among the parliamentary party candidates running in this general election. In his statement, he said, "I will do my best for regional development, political restoration, and regime change," adding, "I will firmly develop Haenam, Wando, and Jindo, and fight to the end against the mistakes of the Yoon Seok-yeol administration to ensure regime change."

Meanwhile, exit polls from the three terrestrial broadcasters (KBS, SBS, MBC) showed that the expected number of seats for the Democratic Party and the Democratic Coalition exceeded 190 seats. KBS predicted 178-196 seats for the Democratic Party and 87-105 seats for the People Power Party. MBC's exit poll showed 184-197 seats for the Democratic Party and 85-99 seats for the People Power Party, while SBS's poll showed 183-197 seats for the Democratic Party and 85-100 seats for the People Power Party. All three broadcasters predicted 12-14 seats for the Reform Party of Korea.
