Filing Complaints on Seoul Citizen Participation Platform
Ongoing Voting, Department Required to Respond
Crying Citizens at Farewell Gained Attention from Foreign Media
A citizen petition in Seoul has been raised to rent back Fubao, who was sent to China, for a fee and bring him back to Korea.
On the 8th, a citizen proposal was posted on ‘Sangsangdaero Seoul,’ a citizen participation platform operated by the Seoul Metropolitan Government, stating, “Please consider renting back the panda Fubao, who was returned to China, using donations from Seoul citizens and the Seoul city budget, so that citizens can view him at Seoul Grand Park, and so that Chinese visitors coming for the Korean Wave can meet Fubao, a symbol of Korea-China friendship.”
Sympathy voting on this proposal will be held until the 8th of next month. After the voting ends, the relevant department of the Seoul Metropolitan Government must review and respond.
Born in 2020, Fubao is the first giant panda born in Korea. He lived at Everland and was loved by many Koreans. However, in accordance with the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), he was returned to China on the 3rd, before reaching the age of four when he could mate. The sight of thousands of citizens crying as they sent Fubao off became a hot topic in foreign media.
