White Romeo and Black Juliet... Producer Asks "Please Stop the Flood of Criticism"

"Racist Remarks Flood In After Casting Announcement"
"Will Report If Racism Continues"

In the play 'Romeo and Juliet,' the casting of a Black actress in the role of Juliet has sparked racist criticism. As the backlash grew, the production company issued an official statement urging people to stop the criticism.

According to American entertainment media Deadline and others, the production company Jamie Lloyd Company announced the full cast of 'Romeo and Juliet' last week. Tom Holland, known for the Marvel 'Spider-Man' series, was cast as the male lead, Romeo. Franchesca Ameuda Rivers was cast as the female lead, Juliet. Rivers has appeared in the BBC comedy series 'Bad Education' and others.

After the casting was announced, critical comments spread mainly on social media platforms. Many expressed dissatisfaction with Rivers being Black and made racist remarks. On X (formerly Twitter), comments such as "This is not the Romeo and Juliet we wanted to see," "She doesn't fit the role of Juliet," and "Can Romeo really fall in love with her?" were common.

As the controversy escalated, the production company posted a statement condemning racism. The company said, "Since the announcement of the 'Romeo and Juliet' casting, deplorable racism has poured in. It must stop now," adding, "We are working with outstanding artists who should be able to create their work freely without online racism." They continued, "We will support and protect all members at any cost," and warned, "We will not tolerate any abuse. If (racism) continues, we will report it immediately."

This is not the first time a Black actor's casting has caused controversy. Previously, Halle Bailey, a Black actress, was cast as the lead in the movie 'The Little Mermaid,' which sparked debate. Fans of the original work launched a hashtag campaign on social media with '#NotMyAriel.'

Meanwhile, the play 'Romeo and Juliet' will open on May 23 at the Duke of York's Theatre in London and run until August 3. This new production of Shakespeare's romantic tragedy marks Tom Holland's first return to the stage since his debut in 'Billy Elliot' at age 12.
