Sancheong-gun Operates Overflowing Cultural Performances on Weekends

Sancheong Healing Regular Performances Arranged

At Donguibogam Village and Gisan Gugakdang

Madanggeuk and Gugak Performances Until November

The weekends in Sancheong-gun, Gyeongnam, will be filled with abundant regular cultural and artistic performances such as Madanggeuk and traditional Korean music concerts. According to Sancheong-gun on the 9th, the ‘Sancheong Healing Regular Performances’ will be held from the 13th to November 3rd at Gisan Gugakdang in Donguibogam Village and Namsa Yedam Village.

This regular performance features Madanggeuk plays storytelling excellent figures and cultural tourism resources representing Sancheong, as well as traditional Korean music performances at the birthplace of Gisan Park Heon-bong, a great master of Gugak. First, the Madanggeuk regular performances will be held at the lawn square of Donguibogam Village, which is gaining attention as Korea’s number one healing travel destination.

The professional arts group Keundeul Culture and Arts Center will present four Madanggeuk works that tell stories of outstanding figures and cultural tourism resources representing Sancheong: ▲Ojakgyo Arirang ▲Jjillekkot ▲Nammyeong ▲Mokhwa. The first performance, Ojakgyo Arirang, will be staged at 1 p.m. on the 13th, with a total of 20 performances planned.

In particular, the first stage on this day will be held at the Donguibogam Village theme hall in connection with the ‘2024 Sancheong Agricultural Special Products Grand Festival.’ Except for this weekend’s performance, from April to June, performances will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays; in July and August, at 7 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays; and in October and November, at 2 p.m. on the lawn square of Donguibogam Village.

The first performance, Ojakgyo Arirang, is a traditional Madanggeuk play featuring a cheerful wedding operation between Namdori from the lower village and Ggotbuni from the upper village, with various attractions such as traditional weddings and the selling of the wedding chest. The Gugak performances will be held at Gisan Gugakdang located in Namsa Yedam Village, Korea’s first most beautiful village.

Starting with the pungmul group Cheong-eum’s ‘Feast (饗宴) - The Inspiration of Gaya’ at 3 p.m. on the 13th, performances will be held every Saturday until October 26th. However, in July and August, performances will be regularly suspended due to the hot weather during the midsummer season.

Especially this year, various attractions will be provided, including an exhibition hall where visitors can see the achievements of Gisan Park Heon-bong, a great master in the Gugak world, at a glance, as well as outdoor performances.

Also, young and talented Gugak artists who inherit the will of Gisan Park Heon-bong will have a stage to freely showcase their talents, and performances by masters called luminaries in the Gugak world, including traditional performances, will be held.

Cheong-eum, which will present the first performance, is a professional arts group active in Gyeongnam. They actively work to deliver local traditional and folk cultural content harmonized with modern sophistication, allowing audiences to get closer to life and traditional cultural arts.

A county official said, “We will make further efforts to ensure that the regular cultural performances harmonize well with Sancheong’s excellent cultural tourism resources and become an outstanding tourism product that contributes to attracting tourists and revitalizing local tourism.”
